Facilitation

An external facilitator is a trained professional who brings both process design and “in the room” leadership to groups and/or teams to guide them in working together effectively towards a shared goal. A key strength that external facilitators bring is, as they are a neutral third party, they can make it safe for participants to challenge assumptions, contribute controversial perspectives, and participate fully without fear of repercussion or judgment- critical. A key role of the facilitator is to ensure inclusion of a diversity of knowledge and experience that leads to good decisions.

Whether an existing work or community team, or a group of strangers coming together around a common interest or goal, the facilitator works in collaboration with the client to co-design a process to support the group or team in meeting their goals - together. The facilitator is also tasked with creating and hosting a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas, expressing opinions and participating in discussions.  It is also widely recognized that regardless of the relationships in the team, different opinions or experiences, disagreements and misunderstandings can occur and need to be managed:) Some people may feel shy or lack confidence when speaking in a group, while others may dominate discussions. A facilitator ensures that everyone has a chance to share their thoughts and feel valued. This builds confidence, trust and a sense of belonging. Effective facilitation will always leave the client with specific actions they will take to move their agenda forward.

Examples of initiatives that benefit from an external facilitator include:

  • Strategic Planning - new or renewing

  • Annual Organizational or Team Goal Setting - identification of priority plans, including metrics of success

  • Change Management Processes

  • Cross Functional Collaborative or Collective Impact Initiatives
